What Are Some Challenging Golf Courses In Portimao?

Portimao, Portugal is a haven for European golf. It’s home to some of the most beautiful golf courses and resorts Europe has to offer. The area is a staple for the European Tour and a popular destination among tour pros. Here are a few of courses in the area and the challenges they present:

  • Alto Golf & Country Club

  • Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

  • Morgado Golf & Country Club

  • Alamos Golf Course

Alto Golf & Country Club

This course is located on the edge of the fishing village of Valor. It is the last course to be designed by renowned golf course architect, Sir Henry Cottons. He has designed many golf courses throughout Europe and is especially known for designing many courses in the Algarve alone. This course is maybe the least difficult course on the list but don’t let that fool you. It features a 600-meter par 5 that is known as the ‘Sir Henry Challenge.”

Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is home to the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course. Contrary to the previous course, this was the first course designed and constructed in the Algarve. It is a regular fixture for the Portuguese Open on the European Tour. It is designed with tree-lined fairways and strategically placed water hazards that make accuracy very important to navigate this track. The 13th hole is regarded as one of the top 500 holes in the world. It proves challenging for even the best tour pros, so be sure to play carefully.

Morgado Golf & Country Club

Morgado is a links style course set in the valley of the Algarvean interior. Links style courses are very prominent in European countries and generally have wide, flat fairways that are lined with many pot bunkers. The ground has a tendency to allow the ball to run out more than usual making the pot bunkers come into play for even the most accurately played shots. To make things even more difficult, the absence of trees makes this course very vulnerable to winds coming off the ocean.

Alamos Golf Course

Alamos is the sister course to Morgado. Although it is shorter than its sister course, par 71 to Morgado’s par 72, it presents a much different challenge. Tight tree-lined fairways making accuracy more important. There are two large lakes surrounding the course that bring hazards into play on a handful of holes. It has large, elevated greens that make a good short game essential to carding a good score.
